Ganiu Ismail
Biography
Ganiu Ismail (b. 1997) emerges as a dynamic force in the contemporary art scene, from Lagos, Nigeria. Ganiu discovered the colorful world of art through his childhood cartoons. The animated characters and figures, as well as the vibrant landscapes ignited a creative spark within him, leading to a lifelong commitment to the discipline of visual arts. Growing up in Lagos, a city pulsating with energy, and diversity, provided him with a wealth of inspiration, drawn from the myriad of cultures that coexist.
A graduate of Painting from the Yaba College of Technology, Lagos, Ganiu has honed his skills through structured Art education, which not only equipped him with the technical skills necessary for artistic expression, but also exposed him to diverse influences and artistic philosophies.
An integral part of Ganiu’s narrative is the profound influence of his Islamic faith, and Yoruba heritage. These transcend mere religious and cultural adherence; they have become fountains of inspiration for his art. One notable source of inspiration lies in the patterns adorning his prayer mat. Another can be seen in the details of the fabric with which he clothes his subjects. These intricate designs, reflective of the precision of geometry in Islamic art, or the regal nature of traditional Yoruba traditional garments find their way into Ganiu’s canvasses, creating a harmonious fusion of spirituality, culture, and visual expression.
