Janet Rady Fine Art at Milan Image Art Fair 2023

March 23 - March 26

Janet Rady Fine Art is pleased to participate in ‘Underskin, Stories from Iran’, a curated section focusing on Iranian photography at MIA Fair 2023 with works by Azadeh Akhlagi, Armin Amirian, Firouz Farmanfarmaian, Fereydoun Ave, Majid Koorang Beheshti, Abbas Kiarostami, Malekeh Nayiny and Jalal Sepehr.

With the devastating death of the young Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini at the hands of Iran’s morality police in September 2022, Iran continues to stand at a social and political crossroads. Nationwide protests and riots that have engulfed the country are destined to change the course of Iran’s politics, society and culture – especially in relation to the position and circumstance of women. With the world’s eyes on the fragile state of Iran and its political turmoil, Janet Rady Fine Art at MIA Fair 2023 focuses on artistic production which responds, questions and challenges this context through the work of eight Iranian photographers:  Azadeh Akhlagi, Armin Amirian, Firouz Farmanfarmaian, Fereydoun Ave, Majid Koorang Beheshti, Abbas Kiarostami, Malekeh Nayiny and Jalal Sepehr.

Tackling notions of female identity and the role of women, sexuality and the human body, conflict, both violent and non-violent, and notions of home, identity and statehood, these photographer’s works are particularly pertinent at a time of such societal upheaval and political instability; where the position and rights of women and an entire population’s very way of life is hanging in the balance. Through defiance, subversiveness and a rebellious spirit, particularly in their refusal to conform to the state’s strict dictates on who, what, where and how something can be captured and represented by the photographic lens, these photographers stand as a mirror against the deep-rooted conflicts and contradictions that run deep in Iranian society.

Janet Rady Fine Art’s presentation will feature in Underskin, Stories from Iran, a curated section at the fair, bringing together a selection of global galleries that present and support emerging and established Iranian artists, living within and outside of Iran. The eight photographers that we will be exhibiting capture the beauty, contradictions and conflicts that are deeply rendered onto the canvas of their country, and expound on its systematic social and political wounds. We hope to amplify the voices of these photographers, so that social rights never become privileges.  More than ever, we must create a strong exhibition made up of uncompromising, awkward, urgent works that provoke, dissect and instigate necessary changes: not just for Iran, but for the whole world.
