Karine Hochar

Biography

Born 1970 in Beirut, Karine Hochar comes from a mixed Lebanese Mexican heritage. The self-taught artist has exhibited her artworks in Beirut, Dubai, New York, Florence, Abu Dhabi, Paris and Cairo. She was awarded the “Special Commendation from the President” medal at the XIV-th Florence Biennale for her sculptures in 2023.

When modelling her sculptures, she creates rough surfaces with generous volumes and curves, evoking the feeling of a serene and joyful world. However, at times, she chooses to convey the turmoil of political and civil unrest in Lebanon by adjusting her technique. This vast thematic departure reflects the intricacies of societal dynamics and the individual experiences reflected on by Hochar. Her art becomes a machinery to spark introspection, encouraging viewers to decipher the complex layers of human behaviour, particularly as a product of external societal impact.
