Mohamed Chebaa

Biography

Chabâa, born in Tangier in 1935, studied at the School of Fine Arts in Tetouan before continuing his studies in Rome on an Italian government scholarship. Influenced by European avant-garde, he explored a lyrical gesture in his paintings. Returning to Morocco, he taught at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Casablanca and founded Studio 400, later renamed Studio Shine. Chabâa was a pioneering voice in modern Moroccan painting, advocating for its identity and integration into urban spaces. He wrote regularly for Al Alam and was a founding member of the Union of Writers of Morocco. Committed to popularizing art, he organized conferences and wrote extensively on Moroccan painting. Recognized for his contributions, he received honors including the Wissam of the Officer Order from King Mohammed VI. Chabâa passed away in 2013, leaving behind a legacy of artistic innovation and social commitment.
