Mohamed Anzaoui

Biography

Born in 1964 in Asilah, Mohamed Anzaoui is initiated into painting in studios for children of Moussem. Following a stay at the Cité Intérnationale des Arts in Paris 2001, he journeys on his career. At the start of the 1990s, he began to expose his works in Asilah and throughout Morocco and Europe, counting Spain and the Netherlands. In 2000, he collaborated with Mouad Yebari and Souhaïl Benazzouz to create L’Atelier, a space in Asilah to expose artworks and share comradery. Mohamed Anzaoui creates with no prior education or experience in the arts. His paintings transport us to a dreamscape, where all is possible between the sky, sea and soil. Each piece narrates dreams and thoughts sprouting from our memories and desires. He explores the body, flower and animal to create a sense of the subconscious. One of these animals is a fish, serving as a guide to open the space.
From acrylics to different types of pigments, the colors are fused, with some hidden, purposely there or laying on the canvas. These pigments engage with each other; meeting, overlapping, diffusing, embracing and inserting into one another. The surfaces are smooth, plowed, grainy or rough, alluring to the elements included in the painting.
His artworks are influenced by the Moussem in Asilah, populated by numerous talents across the country over the years.
